Goals

The Generative AI Working group will investigate impacts of Generative AI and other AI tools on the areas of pedagogy, and academic and administrative operations within the higher education institution context to provide recommendations for how UBC should address potential opportunities and challenges.

The committee recognizes that Generative AI has created a need to consider the implications for UBC from a student, staff and faculty lens as this technology rapidly progresses. The committee will be evaluating the opportunities that come with Generative AI while considering its risks and limitations. The Steering Committee is expected to meet over the next 12-18 months and will involve stakeholders through the process of exploring this topic.

The goals of the committee are to:

  • Assess the current state of Generative AI and conversational AI, and where we might foresee capabilities in the next one to five years and the implications for UBC
  • Identify benefits, risks and issues associated with the use of generative and conversational AI and recommend potential mitigations
  • Identify potential areas within pedagogy, research, and administration where Generative AI can be integrated and issues that need to be addressed
  • Develop recommendations for integrating Generative AI into the higher education institution’s business model
