AI Student Council

The UBC Student AI Advisory Council serves as an advisory body comprising students from both the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses. Its purpose is to provide informed, student-centred perspectives on the development and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) policies, projects, and initiatives that influence the academic and student experience at UBC.

The Council advises the UBC AI Steering Committee by offering thoughtful insights and recommendations on the ethical, responsible, and innovative use of AI across teaching, learning, research, and student life. Through inclusive representation and collaborative engagement, the Council contributes to shaping AI strategies that reflect the diverse needs and experiences of UBC’s student community.

How was the Council formed?
The UBC Student Artificial Intelligence Advisory Council was established in response to a clear need identified by the UBC GenAI Steering Committee to better understand and integrate student experiences, perspectives, and expertise into university-wide conversations about AI. Following this, an open call for applications was issued in spring 2025. Students from both the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses, including graduate and undergraduate students, applied. Applicants were reviewed based on their academic standing, demonstrated interest in the ethical and responsible use of AI, and a commitment to inclusive and collaborative dialogue. The inaugural Council includes undergraduate and graduate students from diverse disciplines and backgrounds, including representation from AMS, SUO, and GSS.

How do students join the Council?
Students join the Council through an annual open application process. Eligible students must be in good academic standing, have completed UBC’s foundational GenAI training, and demonstrate a strong interest in contributing to the evolving role of AI in student life, learning, and research. The selection process ensures broad representation across campuses, academic programs, and lived experiences. Calls for applications are distributed through the university’s communication channels, such as the GenAI Newsletter.

Membership

The Council is co-chaired by members of the leadership from academic and student portfolios, and includes a broad range of students from both campuses.
